NO MORE CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER TIMELINE?!
Twitter, the place where the timeline is living in the moment. You open the app, land on your timeline, scroll through the previous tweets until you get to the top, refresh and you'll be instantly inundated with more live comments, news and information from whoever it is you choose to follow. UNTIL NOW
It was late last night and as I scrolled through my Twitter timeline, something felt different. I scrolled to the top of my timeline and no new tweets appeared. I did it again...same result. I closed the app, tried again and the same thing happened. Had Twitter suddenly shut down? Where has everyone gone? Then I realised....an algorithm change! My heart sank :(
Many moons ago, Facebook did it....the world erupted! Instagram did it earlier this year....the world erupted and it still doesn't feel right. Now Twitter. However, with Twitter it is CHOICE it hasn't been forced upon you and you can turn it off! Fantastic news! Will it be a long term option? Who knows.
The aim is that for users it'll make it easier to jump back into the app, without feeling overwhelmed by the live stream. Twitter hopes that the change will keep people on the app for longer, will keep newer users engaged and older users coming back for more!
We all know Twitter have been struggling with a number of things. Users have been dropping off, advertisers aren't spending money and traffic has been at an all time low. For brands, the hope with the new timeline is to boost the visibility of their best organic content.
Brands need to get more users interacting with the content, it needs to be engaging, enticing and something users want to give their time to. With the algorithm change this will increase the brands chances of top performing content being pushed to the timelines of followers who may not have seen it or missed it. In turn the goal is for brands to experience growth, build the trust and then for the advertising revenue to return.
If you want to turn off the new Timeline, simply go to your account settings and you can select to turn it off there! SIMPLE!
